UV-C Lighting Fixtures and Their Applications in the Time of COVID 19

Ben Rajewski, P.Eng., LC,
WELL AP - Team Lead, Electrical - Williams Engineering Canada

The current COVID-19 pandemic has caused everyone to think about how to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria. UV light has been shown to neutralize viruses and bacteria. Many lighting manufacturers have come out recently with UV fixtures although the fixtures are not yet widely used. Are these fixtures safe to use, what are their applications and what is the future of the technology?

This presentations will give an overview of the current technology, types of fixtures, applications and safety of the installations, as well as where the technology is going and how this may impact building design and constructions in the future.

Designing & Deploying Budget Friendly, Code Compliant Lighting Controls

Dave Hiemstra, CLCP, CTR
Controls Group Manager Optics Lighting

How to do we keep moving forward at a time when all around Alberta we are pulling back?

Budgets are being cut while specifiers and contractors are all looking for effective ways to meet code and meet the clients needs under the cost constraints. It’s easy to fall back to the methods we have previously used and assume it will be the lowest cost approach, but in some cases this isn’t true.

In this presentation we will look at the current NECB 2017 code requirements for lighting control and find cost effective ways to both meet code and client expectations while not always defaulting to analog control. We will also look at the ways newer technology and rapidly decreasing costs of those technologies can save time on site and reduce the complexity of installation to avoid deficiencies and problems down the road. Lighting Controls and Code don’t have to be costly or complex and the old ways of doing things may not always be the best anymore.
